Beginning our study of birds

The grade twos had an in-class field trip today with a representative visiting from the O.W.L. refuge centre.  We learned all kinds of fascinating facts about birds of prey (raptors) that are found locally in our environment.  The kids especially loved experiencing visits with two live birds.  The first was a rescue - people had brought back a baby bird from Mexico that they were trying to keep as a household pet.  As a result, it was never given the proper nutrients to grow and develop properly.  It is unable to hunt in the wild because it's bones are too fragile.  The second was a barn owl.  We learned just how important these birds are to our local ecosystems and how much they help us keep the mice and vole population under control.  We also learned how we can help protect their habitat so they will continue to thrive in this area.

This was a great way to kick off our bird unit!  Ask your son or daughter about something they learned during our presentation today!
