This week, we started our math unit on Patterns. Our first lesson was one of exploration; making patterns, using the language of patterns (pattern core, repeating, labeling), and sharing their patterns with their group. They loved it! It was a bit noisy and a bit chaotic, but they were able to show their understanding and get excited for patterns.
Over the unit, we will continue to build on their knowledge and work up to increasing patterns; that's where it gets a bit more difficult. By the end, they will be able to start with a number or pattern, and continue adding while increasing their pattern at the same time. For example, starting at 1 and adding 2 each time, the pattern would be: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, etc.
